Baby Scans

When will you have a baby scan?

Being pregnant, it is important to go on a regular check ups with your OB Gyne because this is one way to assure yourself as to how your pregnancy is progressing. During the first three months of pregnancy, some women may experience symptoms like vaginal bleeding, vomiting, abdominal paint, nausea and more. These symptoms are just normal and will soon stop as you go through the next stage of pregnancy.

Since pregnancy can be very dangerous for some women, they must confirm whether their pregnancy is healthy or not. This is the reason why ultrasound scans are needed to prove a possible and healthy pregnancy. Early pregnancy scan gives chance for you as an expectant mother to have peace of mind as to how you and your baby are progressing.

When will you have a baby scan? Usually, beginning from the 8th week of pregnancy, early pregnancy scan is performed. Moreover, the heartbeat of a child is only detectable during the 8th week. The best thing for you is to wait until the 8th week of your conception to have the scan is performed. Otherwise, you will not feel satisfied with the results and will go home worried because you have not seen your baby’s heartbeat.
Although some expectant mothers prefer to come in during the 9th week of their conception, you can always come in between the 8th and 14th week. This time, baby’s legs and arms are formed, so it is more likely exciting than only having to see the heartbeat.

Upon asking your doctor about the time when will you have a baby scan, he will give recommendation for a known sonographer who will perform the ultrasound scan for you. However, if you want to have other sonographer, you can always refuse the recommendation of your doctor; after all it is your right to choose where you feel most comfortable.

What happens during the ultrasound scan?

During the ultrasound scan, your sonographer will first examine your baby’s heartbeat as well as check if you are carrying one or two or three or even more child in your womb. If you are carrying twins, it can be shown in the ultrasound scan. The sonographer will also determine your expected delivery date.

There are 2D scans, 3D and 4D scans. If you are not sure about your last menstrual period (the basis in determining the expected delivery date), through the use of ultrasound scan, it can measure and determine the gestational age accurately, providing you with correct expected delivery date. You can take home a 2D scan which is printed together with the findings of the sonographer regarding your baby’s feature which include the measurement of the baby and the water bag.

When having an ultrasound scan, it is recommended to have your bladder be filled because a full bladder will improve the image shown on the TV screen. You can drink at least 2 pinch of water one hour before the scheduled appointment.
